More than a celebration

Three years ago, a passionate and devoted group of Sikh youth came together and created a campaign called ‘Walking Away Hunger (WAH).’ Their hope was to run a campaign fully managed by youth to help the less fortunate by raising food and money. Inspired by the Nagar Kirtan (Sikh Parade) held annually in Calgary, their goal is to work with Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s ideology of Langar (free Kitchen), by collecting food for those in need.

WAH hopes to inspire youth of all ages, races, and cultures to come together and fight the problem of hunger in Calgary. By providing an outlet for leadership, teamwork, and innovation, WAH works with and assists those who are passionate about giving back and helping others. In the past three years, the WAH campaign with the support from Calgary High schools, post-secondary institutes, local businesses, and community organizations, has successfully raised over $92,000 in cash and food donations for the Calgary Inter-faith Food Bank. We encourage all youth to get involved with this campaign and to come together for one cause; to walk away hunger. Individuals can easily get involved in WAH in many different ways. Some ways are:

  • Signing up your school with WAH and setting up food boxes so all students can donate
  • Talking to local businesses to support our cause
  • Talking to community representatives for donations
  • Spreading the word about WAH at work and various organizations

WAH is always looking for new and innovative ways to effectively fundraise; we welcome any new ideas as well as support. Our goal is to inspire unity within our surrounding communities and the Sikh youth. The youth are essential to the success of this campaign and without their help we would be unable to accomplish what we have today.
